  • RLE - Refractive Lens Exchange

Modern cataract surgery has evolved to the point that we now have a high amount of control over your final glasses prescription. It is now possible to reduce or eliminate myopia (short sightedness), hyperopia (long sightedness) or astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery with strong predictability.

  • What is RLE - Refractive Lens Exchange

Modern cataract surgery has evolved to the point that we now have a high amount of control over your final glasses prescription. It is now possible to reduce or eliminate myopia (short sightedness), hyperopia (long sightedness) or astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery with strong predictability. It is even possible to provide solutions for presbyopia (the need for reading glasses) in some patients. As this technology has evolved more and more patients are seeking this benefit of the procedure at a younger age. When we perform this surgery for refractive benefit only, prior to cataract formation, we term the procedure RLE.

RLE is the correction of refractive error and presbyopia in the eye by replacement of the natural lens with an advanced technology IOL. The ideal patient has refractive error and is in the age range that they are also suffering from presbyopia. This is typically patients over 50 years old. Our goal with the RLE procedure is to reduce or eliminate the use of glasses at all distances post-surgery. Often seeing a local Ophthalmologists or Optometrist in conjunction with your family physician or a registered dietician is a great option to dealing with eye conditions and symptoms.

RLE is a powerful refractive intervention but is an intraocular procedure and as such carries risk. Dr. Moloney may not feel you are a good candidate for this procedure based on your examination and may not feel all lens options are available to you. We may also decide that the eye is “too young” or not ready for the surgery. If you are over 50 and interested in an RLE, contact our office for a consultation. If you would like more information about refractive cataract surgery, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your local optician or ophthalmologist
