Dr. Colten Wendel MD FRCSC , Ophthalmologist, Surrey was born and raised outside of Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan, on a fish farm. Dr. Colten Wendel MD FRCSC , Ophthalmologist, Surrey moved to Chilliwack, British Columbia prior to high school and was accepted into medical school at the University of British Columbia after completing three years of a Biochemistry degree at the University of Saskatchewan. Upon receiving his medical degree with great distinction, he completed his 5-year Ophthalmology residency at the University of British Columbia.

Dr. Colten Wendel MD FRCSC , Ophthalmologist, Surrey is board certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC). Dr. Colten Wendel MD FRCSC , Ophthalmologist, Surrey participates in various research projects and his work has been published in the Archives of Ophthalmology, Glaucoma, and most recently, uveitis publications in cystoid macular edema post-cataract surgery.

Dr. Colten Wendel MD FRCSC , Ophthalmologist, Surrey excelled throughout his residency training with the highest number of cataract surgeries in the history of the University of British Columbia’s residency program.

Dr. Wendel has won numerous awards, including the Governor General’s Bronze Medal in 2008, the George & Martha Ivy President’s First Choice Scholarship, and the University of British Columbia Ophthalmology Research Day in 2018.  He is a member of the British Columbia Medical Association, the Canadian Medical Association, British Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Canadian Ophthalmologic Society, British Columbia Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.

Outside of work. Dr. Wendel can be found running with his wife and dog, cycling to work, or playing hockey.  He is an avid Denver Broncos fan, which has provided some great ammunition for his patients to make fun of him – use it!

In fact, after the first or second injection, patients become quite at ease with the idea that they will have these injections, Following an intravitreal injection, you may feel pressure or grittiness in the eye, slight bleeding on the white of the eye and floaters in your vision. These are temporary and normal. As glaucoma progresses, it damages more and more of your optic nerve fibers, leading to vision loss. With primary open-angle glaucoma, the fluid can’t effectively flow back out of your eye. Angle-closure glaucoma occurs when the iris of the eye closes off the drainage angle completely, causing an increase in IOP pressure and damage to the optic nerve.

Glaucoma is a condition where there is increased pressure within the eyeball, causing damage to the optic nerve and gradual loss of sight.  If glaucoma is detected early preventative measures can be taken to save vision loss.

Cataracts can affect both eyes or just one, and some patients experience mild symptoms, while others can barely see any shapes or movements. Cataract symptoms include blurry vision, haloes, sensitivity to bright lights, decreased night vision, frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions, and faded colours.

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that primarily affect the optic nerve, which transmits visual information from the retina to the brain. In most cases of glaucoma, damage to the optic nerve is associated with increased pressure within the eye, known as intraocular pressure (IOP). However, glaucoma can also occur without elevated IOP, known as normal-tension glaucoma.

When the pressure inside the eye becomes elevated, it can cause compression and damage to the retinal fibers that make up the optic nerve. These fibers are responsible for transmitting visual signals to the brain, allowing us to see.
